"Scientific and Structural Achievements from Academia-Industry Projects in ECHORD"

Half-day workshop for Robotics: Science and Systems 2013

Berlin, Germany

June 28, 2013 (afternoon)

Location: TU Berlin, Building Marchstraße

Three years after the beginning of the largest project in European robotics, the ECHORD workshop will reflect and project the exchange of knowledge and experience between academic researchers and practitioners.

One of the goals of modern robotics research is to make robotic technology directly usable within application contexts. For this purpose the flexibility, autonomy, safety and cooperation skills of such systems need to be improved further. In order of making this short term goal possible and to secure its long term sustainability, knowledge transfer between robot manufacturers and research institutions needs to be fostered and strengthened. Three years ago the ECHORD (European Clearing House for Open Robotics Development) started under a European Union FP7-ICT grant as a pioneering means of supporting the aforementioned goals. More than 50 sub-projects were carried out. Now, toward the end of the project it seems useful to reflect both on the scientific achievements within the area as well as the general topic of industry-academia collaboration.

The vital collaboration between European robot manufacturers and research institutions within ECHORD has resulted in significant innovations in many aspects of the robotic field. A systematic overview of the ECHORD experiments will be given by the coordinating partners of ECHORD, accompanied by selected contributions from ECHORD experiments. Overall this workshop will focus on results of such collaborative endeavors as well as meta-analyses which pertain to the project itself. The workshop will also include invited speakers and will thus provide an opportunity for looking ahead toward industry-academia partnerships beyond ECHORD.
