About us

The Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute (MMMI) was established in 1997 as part of the Faculty of Science of the University of Southern Denmark. In 2006 it became part of the then newly established Faculty of Engineering. The Institute has become a highly technological, inter-nationally recognized centre of excellence, where academia and industry in close collaboration develop new technologies for intelligent autonomous systems. The Institute’s core research areas are artificial intelligence and its usage in autonomous systems, cognitive vision, real-time processing and embedded systems, applied mathematics for mathematical modeling of e.g. mechanical systems and processes, object-oriented software development, especially in terms of modelling, architecture and evolution of software.

What motivates us

We participate in the ECHORD Experiment since we have a very concrete idea of applying a scientific achievement gained in the European integrated project PACOplus (funded by one of the cognitive system calls) viz. the concept of grasp densities in an industrial robotic environment as described in (Renaud Detry, Dirk Kraft, Anders Glent Buch, Norbert Krüger and Justus Piater: Refining Grasp Affordance Models by Experience. ICRA 2010). The industrial environment is provided by another partner to the LearnBiP Experiment, Scape Technologies A/S, which is working in the field of industrial bin picking. Hence, the ECHORD call as well as the straightforward way of applying fitted our aims perfectly.
